Does anyone happen to have an estimate of how long will this glittery, colorful, over the top... celebration is going to last?

I'm not arguing that. But if most of these people have never heard of the holiday they're supposed to be trampling the stores over, then it might not happen.

Some need only the barest excuse to go on celebrating though, even if they don't understand the significance of something.

If you find something annoying, I would think keeping it in mind in order to avoid it as much as possible would be the sensible thing to do.

Familiarity, in itself, is worth missing, even if there isn't a specific thing you would assign it to.

So what I'm missing is just my comfortable rut? That's very reassuring. [The dry tone suggests these implications are not, in fact, reassuring at all.]

Whether it is reassuring or not, if you cannot recognize the source of your nostalgia, then it is probably true.

Maybe. For now, my sister's actually here, so I guess I'm looking after her first.
