Character

Name: Dracule "Hawk-eyes" Mihawk
Fandom: One Piece
Gender: Male
Age: 43
Time Period: Post Time-skip, after Perona and Zoro leave the island.
Wing Color: purplish dark-red, the same color as the inside of his coat.
History: Here.
Personality: Mihawk is a very, very rare type of character in a series like One Piece: he's the straight man. He's the serious, focused, no nonsense type of guy who makes the crazy antics of other characters stand up in greater contrast. Often, he's the character in the background that remains unmoved and unfazed by the action in the forefront. That's not to say that he's a bland character, by any means, but unlike much of the cast, who is filled with quirks and prone to outrageous stunts, Mihawk comes across as a more restrained sort of person. By comparison, if nothing else.

The core of his personality is that he is aware of his talents, his strength and even some of his weaknesses. Mihawk is mostly at peace with his place in the world, because he made his place in the world. He is aloof, often standing by his own and minding his own business, not really concerned with what goes on around him, because he literally exists in an entirely different level than the rest of the world. Everything he is, is everything he's made himself to be, and he has solid pride about his achievements. When Mihawk talks about his strength, he is not boasting or bragging, he's making a statement of fact. A good part of who he is centers around his title as the World's Greatest Swordsman; a title that has been universally acknowledged every time it comes up. He is, to put it bluntly, the best at what he does. And he is very aware of this, simply because he walked the talk and fought every step of the way to reach his goal.

But of course, not everything about Mihawk revolves around his title, even if most of his appearances and mentions in canon do. He is a serious, focused man, who knows what he wants and works towards it without second thoughts. His dedication and determination are noteworthy, especially when one focuses on the most important detail about his prowess and strength: Dracule Mihawk is one of the most powerful characters in One Piece, and he is also of the precious few that remains truly human. He has no superhuman talents, no Devil's Fruit super powers, no genetic advantages, like being a Fishman, and no technological enhancements (which even applies to the ship he sails with, essentially a raft). Mihawk is purely human, which tells you how hard he has worked to reach his current status. This makes his role as the straight man to the rest of the cast's antics far more interesting. It's not that Mihawk doesn't notice what goes around him, it's that he's not impressed by it.

He's not impressed by a whole lot of things, really.

Beyond his title and his strength, Mihawk is a rather placid man, not particularly violent or aggressive, unless provoked. And even when someone goes out of their way to engage him, he is not necessarily meanspirited. He doesn't have to be, when he can crush essentially everyone he meets without a second thought. What comes across as overkill - defeating Zoro and his three swords with what basically amounts to a diner knife, for example - is really more a side effect of his gargantuan power. His greatest foe, thus far, seems to be boredom. Most swordsmen who fight him for his title are laughably weak, and he refuses to fight his old time rival, Red-Head Shanks, since he lost one of his arms. Thus far, he has only truly acknowledged Zoro as a rival and legitimate contender for his title, and he seems to have high hopes for him, which goes to show that once you conquer the top, there really isn't much left to do. Mihawk is rather choosy about his duties as a Shichibukai, and gives the impression he only took the post so people would leave him to his own devices. He fights who he wants, because he wants to, not because he's told to.

Worth note, as well, is his curious streak, as it seems to be his main motivation, and clearly related to his need to relieve some boredom. Mihawk does some things that would appear reckless and impulsive to most - attacking Whitebeard, one of the most powerful pirates in the world - just out of curiosity, but again, there are so few things in the world that pose a real danger to him, that there isn't any real recklessness from his perspective. After all, Mihawk holds the honor of being the only character who has thus emerged not only victorious but unscathed from every single fight and confrontation he has been in. When confronted with the few outrageous things he does, one needs to keep in mind that they aren't so outrageous, from his perspective.

Although obscure and somewhat morbid, he does possess a sense of humor, which he displays when he laughs for the first and only time seen thus far: the preposterous idea that he should train the man who has sworn to kill him, which strikes him as absolutely hilarious. (And then he goes and does exactly that, anyway.) This willingness to teach is compounded by an actual ability to do so, as he is mentioned to be an effective teacher. As far as silly moments go, Mihawk gets very few, and often involve his strange relationship with Shanks. "Friend" might be too strong a word to ever use when referring to Mihawk, but he is quite capable of respecting and even tolerating others, and he isn't entirely anti-social.

Finally, two very important things to keep in mind about Mihawk are his sense of honor and his dramatic nature, which often go hand in hand. Mihawk is one of, if not outright the most honorable character in One Piece. He keeps his word and does not disgrace his sword by abusing it. This ties up to his unwillingness to fulfill all the duties assigned to him as a Shichibukai. He is selfish and self-centered, in the sense that he only cares about his own goals, but thus far he has never attacked anyone who didn't attack him first. He never really uses more power than he needs to win a battle - in fact, we have yet to see Mihawk get truly serious about a fight. These add up to his dramatic - perhaps even melodramatic - nature in that while he often ignores the world around him, the world certainly cannot ignore Dracule Mihawk, no matter where he goes. Everything about him is a production. His clothes, his sword, his wording, his friggin' ship. Every single thing about him is a statement, every detail is measured to convey meaning, and that, if nothing else, betrays a vain nature underneath his down-to-earth attitude. He is exactly who he wants to be, does exactly what he wants to do, says exactly what he wants to say.

Strengths:

Physical: Obviously, Mihawk is up there as one of the strongest characters in the series, as demonstrated every time he wields Yoru, his seven feet monstrosity of a sword that's longer than he's tall. His swordsmanship skill is unrivaled thus far, and he has proven his ability by emerging unscathed from every single confrontation and battle he has been in, including the chaotic battle in Marinefold, where even the all powerful Navy Admirals found themselves roughed up a little.
Mental: Mihawk is a very observant and calculative person. He studies situations around him and takes decisions based on logic and careful deliberation, rather than instinct or gut. He's an experienced man, as well, having lived a tempestrous life, and he's capable of using that experience and apply it to the various situations he's comfronted with. He demonstrate these skills in fights against ranged opponents, by simply redirecting their bullets with his sword, and not, say, try to slash them - which given that he can cut through steel, he's perfectly capable of. The battle of Marinefold, again is a perfect example of his observation skills, as well as his self-control.
Emotional: Mihawk is not emotionless, but he has an irongrip on his emotions, keeping them all in check and refusing to betray them at any moment. This makes it extremely hard to surprise him or uspet him in battle, and in turns often serves as an intimidation tactic.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Despite being as strong as he is, Mihawk is, in the end, just human. That's one of his greatest strengths and his greatest weaknesses. He doesn't have super powers or special abilities to make up for his human nature, and he's just as susceptible of dying or getting hurt as anyone else. It's simply that he's worked very hard to make it as unlikely as possible for it to happen.
Mental: Though Mihawk tries very hard to keep himself grounded and not be arrogant, being put into a new situation, as will invariably happen in Luceti, will force him to reevalute his place in the world. He enjoys situations that test his experience and his curiosity can certainly be his downfall, if he encounters something he's not equiped to deal with, as he will often end up taking impulsive decisions. For example, his decision to train Zoro came only after he found all his expectations beaten and thrown upside down. And he himself realizes he's doing something that might be reckless and foolish, but goes on with it anyway.
Emotional: Finally, though it has not yet happened in canon, given his tight control on his emotions and the hints of a more passionate nature seen through minute cracks of temper, it's very likely that if Mihawk ever loses control of his emotions, he will be overwhelmed and unable to handle it properly. He's too old and too set in his ways, which he sincerely believes are the best they can be, and if he's forced to handle things outside those parameters, he might not be able to land on his feet as gracefully as he usually does.
